Citra 3DS Emulator Not Working Guide (MSVCP140.dll missing, VCRUNTIME140.DLL missing etc)

During my time with installing and booting Citra I ran into a few issues that were (eventually) solved...

  • Upon booting the .exe there were warnings about MSVCP120/140.DLL & VCRUNTIME140.dll missing.
  • There was a flashing black command prompt screen for a brief half a second.
  • There were errors saying ''the application failed to launch''.
All of these represent just about the same issue [1].

DO NOT watch the YouTube videos that tell you they have the answer, trust me, they just complicate things more than they need to.

  1. All you have to do is follow the instructions on Citra's website.
  2. That would include going to Microsoft's website and downloading their Visual C++ Redistributable for Visual Studio 2015. It doesn't matter if you already have the 2012 versions or whatever else your computer comes with installed; this program requires the 2015 (latest versions) to properly work.
  3. Once you install them everything should be good to go, but YOU NEED TO KEEP THE ORIGINAL .DLL's included with the Citra package IN THE SAME FOLDER AS THE CITRA AND CITRA-QT executable!!!
  4. You need to RESTART your computer after installing the C++ for Visual Studio components.
  5. You need to RUN the Citra-QT file AS ADMINISTRATOR.
  6. I found that having the Citra folder on the desktop and for some reason, having another download of the executables only on the desktop to help. Then run the Citra-QT and it will (maybe) lag for a few seconds and then the command prompt with colored letters and a file-folder looking template will show up as a small additional window to run the Citra emulator.
  7. Search for your ROM using FILE --> Load File --> Click Rom.
  8. That should do everything you need now just be patient!
  9. Some games run a little slower at points but generally this emulator is fucking awesome.
*If it happens you need to install the MSVP140.DLL & VCRUNTIME140.DLL by PUTTING THEM IN THE SYSTEM32 & SYSWOW64 (for Windows) folders then you can download them here as well. They are below.

  • MSVCP140.DLL --> Download here.
  • VCRUNTIME140.DLL --> Download here.
