How To Tell If you Are Anglo-Saxon or Norman. (Personality Traits And Surnames Explored)

First, it is important that you remember that there is not a high percentage of people who are ONLY one or the other with regards to their English/British heritage [1]. Most people are a mix. Some studies show that the Welsh are the only true 'original' British [2] in terms of genealogy. Other studies also show that the Welsh and those corresponding with the 'old' haplogroups in the E1b subclade are of Roman origin, at least in part [3] [4]. More specifically, Roman warriors. Normans are generally of the R1b haplogroup, or R1a haplogroup, although I1 (as with Scandinavians) is also common, but not always the dominant haplogroup [5].

In terms of Normans, the haplogroup would also mean that they share the same haplogroup with most of Europe - including having similarities to those populations in Milan, Italy. It could indicate that a common female ancestor of modern Norman-English populations was descended partly from Lombards or Greeks.

Personality traits going back to the early medieval ages and earlier can be documented. Well before William the Conqueror introduced the Domesday Book.

Many Anglo-Saxon's have part Roman heritage. Many Brits also have German heritage, and a fair amount of Germans have Roman heritage. Some Anglo-Saxon's have ancient to fairly recent Danish genes as well.

*DISCLAIMER*
These are generalizations to a degree, not all of those with Anglo-Saxon heritage will fit these characteristics to the tee, and whatever is a more dominant heritage may be sufficient to supersede these traits. This DOES NOT mean the higher "percentage" of DNA is predominant, but rather, whatever traits (likely) passed down from BOTH Parents are more likely to be the "combined" result.

The Normans were remarked as the following...

The 11th century Benedictine monk and historian, Goffredo Malaterra, characterised the Normans thus:

"Specially marked by cunning, despising their own inheritance in the hope of winning a greater, eager after both gain and dominion, given to imitation of all kinds, holding a certain mean between lavishness and greediness, that is, perhaps uniting, as they certainly did, these two seemingly opposite qualities. Their chief men were specially lavish through their desire of good report. They were, moreover, a race skillful in flattery, given to the study of eloquence, so that the very boys were orators, a race altogether unbridled unless held firmly down by the yoke of justice. They were enduring of toil, hunger, and cold whenever fortune laid it on them, given to hunting and hawking, delighting in the pleasure of horses, and of all the weapons and garb of war.[!]"
