How to Differentiate between High E2 (Estrogen) Levels and Low E2 Levels

Differentiating the Symptoms of Low E2 And High E2

OK. First off, before anybody tries to claim this as a universal reference page - please understand that everyone differs when it comes to so called "symptoms" of estrogen imbalance. You have to be in tune to your own body's signals, but this page just gives you an idea (based on reports and studies) of what you may feel like. It is not an excuse to just go take an anti-e supplement if you think you have all the high E2 symptoms and certainly not an excuse to inject hCG if you feel like you have low E2 - ALWAYS GET BLOODWORK.

That being said, I will summarize this easily and source below that.

High E2 Symptoms / Signs
  • Hot Flashes/Body Temperature Fluctuations
  • High Blood Pressure
  • Water Retention / "Bloated Face" / Joint Swelling
  • Low Libido / Erectile Dysfunction / Weak Erections
  • No Morning Wood
  • Constipation
  • Irritability / Anxiety / Paranoia
  • Possible Psychotic Episodes
  • Low Testosterone in Bloodwork
  • Flushed Face due to High BP
  • Lack of Motivation / Lethargic Feeling
  • Increased Need for Alcohol
  • Lack of Sweating or Excessive Sweating
  • Aches and Pains
  • Over-Emotional - Excessive Feelings of Sadness, Anger, Fear
  • Loss of Muscle Mass (over time) / Inability to Sustain Workouts (decreased cardio performance)
  • Depression
  • Gynecomastia (Male Breast Growth) and other Female Fat Accumulation (love handles, stomach)

Low E2 Symptoms and Signs

  • Low / No Sex Drive
  • No water Retention but Possible Increased BP due to Nitric Oxide Depletion
  • Irritability / Paranoia / Male Dominance Episodes
  • Morning Wood may be Present but "as needed" erections may be Decreased
  • Penile Shrinkage due to Adrenergic Dominance and Low N.O
  • Extreme Brain Fog / Feeling "Out of It"
  • No Motivation to Workout / Decreased Gains in Gym
  • Cardio Performance Decreased / Less Tolerable
  • Unexplained Anxiety
  • Decreased Growth Hormone Secretion
  • High DHT**
  • Insulin Resistance
  • Lack of Pump in Gym / Persistent "Flat Feeling"
  • Obsessive-Compulsiveness
  • Over-Emotional / Dull***

**Low E2 tends to decrease SHBG which leads to higher Free Test and DHT Conversion**

***Low Estrogen can also cause one to be over emotional, although the likelihood of feeling over-emotional vs Dull is very low and seldom heard of. Because estrogen represents a major portion of "brain testosterone" (other than DHT, 3-a-diol etc) it is responsible for much of the anti-depressant effect of Test. ***

***Brain Testosterone (or aromatized Testosterone) inhibits MAO-A/B, COMT and sustains multiple dopamine and serotonin receptor subtypes, as well as NMDA-receptor function***(1)(2)(3)
