4 Natural OTC Serotonin Antagonists

The Natural Serotonin Blockers. Now you may ask why would someone want to block or antagonize serotonin? Well...some people naturally have a little too much, to the point where it causes autonomic dysfunction.... or perhaps you are trying to augment the effects or reduce the effects of an SSRI anti-depressant? In which case the following may be helpful.

It is shown that "Panax Ginseng" is a potent serotonin antagonist. It blocks human serotonin 5-HT(3) receptors and thus stops nausea in it's tracks(1)(2)(3). It also directly decreases serotonin in the hypothalamus and inhibits exercise induced increases in serotonin(4)(5).

Ginseng also acts as a noncompetitive nicotinic receptor antagonist and also inhibits Calcium Channels and Sodium Channels(6)(7).

You can buy a super potent red panax ginseng extract below, guaranteed serotonin antagonist.

The next Natural serotonin antagonist is called "Shilajit".

Shilajit was found to decrease both total and neuronal serotonin levels, especially in the hypothalamus.

It also blocks the enzyme "AcHe" which helps sustain elevated Acetylcholine levels; which in turn lowers serotonin production!

Shilajit is thus a very potent Pro-Cognitive supplement that also lowers serotonin.

The THIRD Natural OTC Serotonin Antagonist would be something called "Vitex Agnus Castus" extract, and this mechanism probably accounts for a great deal of why it also strongly inhibits prolactin levels in both men and women(8)(9)(10)

However, Vitex also exerts significant progestogenic activity, and I don't recommend this product for men necessarily.

And the FOURTH natty serotonin antagonist is one that is often heard about.

Yohimbe Bark Extract

Be careful as the product can be VERY stimulating.

  1. Thanks so much for this Jason! A few months back my boyfriend lost his libido and had chronic diarrhea from taking SSRI pills and antidepressants, we examined and used different stuff, including viagra, cialis and some natural hormone boosters (testosterone boosters)...but none availed. finally we tried the suggestions in your article for blocking serotonin. and omg! it came back and he's feeling more better n less depressed n has his libido back! specifically we are using the products mentioned in this article the shilajit and ginseng. he also had his testosterone levels go way up in blood work. he said he will post here when he has it all together !
    thanks again jason!

  2. What brand of Ginseng are you using?

  3. Is that so? Nobody uses Shilajit, Vitex or Yohimbe to raise serotonin, they are all well-established ``blockers``, so wherever you are getting your information from is wrong - or you are simply a troll post.

  4. I've found another serotonin antagonist, the best I've tried. It's White Willow Bark. Antagonizing serotonin 1-D receptor subtype, and serotonin 2A/2C. http://www.globinmed.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=81664:salix-alba&Itemid=148

    1. hi im trying white willow bark right now i took 1800mg. how long does it to see a decrease in serotonin?? do i need higher dose

    2. I wouldn't take more than 1800mg to avoid stomach irritation or something. For me it works right away, but I don't have excess serotonin. When I take 4 capsules 1600mg I feel very depressed, I rarely use white willow bark.

    6. But why do you want to decrease serotonin?

    7. because I produce way more than the normal person would its genetics for me not sure what its causing it.
a theory is I have low-functioning MAO-A, which means my serotonin doesn't get broken down as quickly.

    8. The study mentioned doesn't justify Willow Bark as an antagonist, I've seen it mentioned on Ray Peat but I think for the most part; Shilajit, Yohimbine & BCAA are more effective.

  6. this was from the source you linked´´In the open field behavior test, processed Shilajit and the isolated active constituents showed
significant efficacy in diminishing anxiety symptoms. However, native Shilajit was not very
effective, probably on account of the free radical contamination in such material, further
    validating the need for purification´´

is the dragon shiljait processed or native?? I dont quite understand that sentence.

  7. Hey thanks for posting this. In your experience, do these supplements need to be taken indefinitely to maintain the benefits? Thanks.

    1. For the most part, to maintain the benefits in full-force, Yes. But some of the positive hormonal benefits remain after 6 months of use.

  8. Psilocybin is also a serotonin receptor antagonist

  9. Why is a natural seratpnon antaganoist a good thing? I have been taking Shilajit and don’t notice any type of depression or anything. But i don’t want to inhibit my seratpnon production.

  10. I have the following important question:

I currently have excess serotonin due to Ativan and 5-HTP overuse. Now, I understand, based on this site, that Shilajit is a serotonin blocker. So if Shilajit is blocking serotonin from being processed, wouldn't it accumulate in the body and ultimately increase my overall serotonin levels due to its lack of elimination?

I need suggestions that will decrease the levels of serotonin in my body, not simply block the serotonin for temporary relief but really causing more harm than good.

Please correct me if I am wrong.

    1. No... an antagonist is not the same as reuptake inhibition.

All an antagonist does is block it from binding to the site, so it prevents the serotonin molecules from activating the receptors. As long as you aren't decreasing SERT (serotonin transporter) which is what SSRI's do, the serotonin will still get taken away from the synapse.

Basically, antagonists just prevent the serotonin from doing it's function, which can be either good or bad, depending on where in the brain, or what you are trying to accomplish.

Think of serotonin molecules like a car driving down the road. Antagonists basically block all of the parking spots, so the the driver cannot park the car, stick around, and shop at a store for a while. When antagonists block the parking spots, the car has no choice but to keep on driving down the road, until they eventually leave town.
