MAO-A - Monoamine Oxidase type A - is an enzyme that breaks down, contrary to the type B enzyme, the neurotransmitters dopamine, norepinephrine AND serotonin...and it also has an effect on, in part through regulation of neurotransmitter accumulation - melatonin synthesis.
While MAO-B only breaks down dopamine and PEA.
The difference between MAO-A inhibition and MAO-B inhibition, in terms of effects on behavior and clinical use , is that MAO-A inhibitors have been around longer and have more exposure as anti-depressants. They have a strong track record for being stimulating but because of their ability to preserve serotonin and norepinephrine as well, they can improve social anxiety more than MAO-B inhibitors.
On the flip side, MAO-A inhibitors (pharma) can provoke allergic reactions more than classical antidepressants and should not be combined with serotonergic medications and supplements.
They also may precipitate the 'cheese' effect and thus eating cheese or other foods with high levels of tyramine is unadvisable and even dangerous while on the medications.
Natural MAO-A inhibitors are a bit safer generally, but it is very difficult to isolate the natural compound and / or to guarantee a clean mechanism of action...however , they may be easier to dose.
The most prominent, acceptable and functional natural MAO inhibitor is known as SYRIAN RUE(1). Containing the alkaloids harmine and harmaline(2) (3).
It can be an alternative to both phenylzine and moclobemide
(two common MAO inhibitor drugs)
